Alternating custody over holidays was tough. My son now spends time with both me and his dad, and it works better for everyone.

Indulge me as I walk down memory lane—or, more appropriately, Main Street USA. For a summer during college in the early 1990s, I joined hundreds of eager students and walked through the gates of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park.
What stayed with me most—beyond the Florida heat, humidity, and the powder blue polyester uniform I wore every day—was Disney’s all-in approach to creating the ultimate guest experience.
When families visit Disney, their expectations are sky-high. Whether it’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip or an annual tradition, the experience must feel nothing short of magical. Thanks to a deeply ingrained “guest-first” culture, Disney consistently exceeds those expectations.
Disney has a name for this elevated approach: Pixie Dust. During training, they taught us how to turn small moments into extraordinary memories. That lesson, simple as it seems, has stayed with me ever since.
Turning mundane into magic
Here’s one example. A guest might ask, “What time is the 3:00 parade?” A simple question, but Disney saw it as an opportunity to create a magical moment. Instead of just saying, “3:00” we were taught to go further:
“That’s a great question—thanks for asking! The parade starts at 3 p.m., but I recommend getting a spot around 2:40 for a better view. If you’d like, I can show you a less crowded area with a perfect vantage point.”
We could even offer extra touches like tips on characters to watch for or free ponchos if rain was in the forecast. Suddenly, a mundane interaction becomes something they’ll remember long after the trip ends.
These moments—small but meaningful—are the essence of Pixie Dust. They transform ordinary experiences into unforgettable memories by exceeding expectations in ways no one anticipates.
Effortless experiences require a kingdom of effort
The magic of Pixie Dust lies in how effortless it feels to the guest. But behind the scenes, these moments are anything but accidental. Every detail at Disney is meticulously planned.
Take the layout of Main Street USA. As guests enter in the morning, they find essentials like sunscreen and snacks. As they leave, stores with apparel and memorabilia are perfectly positioned for last-minute shopping. This intentional design anticipates needs, smoothing the guest experience at every step.
The same principle applies to guest interactions. Every cast member, from park managers to security guards, is empowered to create Pixie Dust moments, with the freedom to act in the moment and make decisions that delight guests.
Bring Pixie Dust to creative work
This philosophy of empowerment isn’t limited to theme parks. It has clear parallels in the ad and marketing world, where delivering the unexpected often defines success.
The most memorable contributions are often the ones no one expects. It might be a groundbreaking bonus idea that reshapes a strategy, a fresh perspective that inspires a breakthrough, or even a thoughtful way to present progress on a project—something as simple as adding personal touches that show creativity and care. These moments might not be part of the ask, but they reflect a deliberate effort to over-deliver, creating impact far beyond expectations.
At the heart of these moments lies empowerment. Pixie Dust doesn’t come from a select few—it’s sparked by everyone. Some of the best ideas often emerge from fresh eyes: team members drawing from past experiences, unexpected sources, or new perspectives. What matters is the freedom to act, the encouragement to think differently, and the belief that everyone has the potential to create magic. It’s about having the confidence to act intuitively, creating moments that feel personal, authentic, and unforgettable.
Lessons for any organization
This philosophy isn’t just for creative work—it’s a mindset that can benefit any organization. Empowering employees to act with care and creativity can make a lasting impact, no matter the industry.
Whether it’s an extra gesture of kindness or an innovative solution to an unspoken need, these moments go beyond “going the extra mile.” They make people feel seen and valued in ways they didn’t expect. Pixie Dust is rare, but when it’s done right, it’s transformative and unforgettable. With the right mix of trust, intention, and creativity, organizations can elevate even the simplest moments into something extraordinary.
Looking back, I’m still inspired by Disney’s ability to anticipate needs and exceed expectations. So, ask yourself: Is your organization structured to deliver those unforgettable, magical moments?
With intention, creativity, and a little Pixie Dust, you can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary—and thankfully, no polyester uniform is required to make it happen.
