Cantaloupe recall hits food retailers in 5 states as FDA warns of potential Salmonella: Symptoms and what to know

A cantaloupe recall has been initiated in multiple states due to fears that the fruits may be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause potentially fatal infections. Here’s what you need to know.

Whats happened?

On September 6, 2024, Eagle Produce LLC of Scottsdale, Arizona, initiated a recall of 224 cases of its whole cantaloupes, according to a recall notice posted on the website of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The recall was initiated after Michigan officials performed a routine testing of a cantaloupe that revealed contamination with Salmonella.

What cantaloupes are being recalled?

The cantaloupes being recalled were distributed by Eagle Produce LLC under the brand name “Kandy.” Only whole cantaloupes are being recalled.

The Kandy whole cantaloupes being recalled have a UPC Number Code of 4050 and a Lot Code of 846468.

Where were the recalled cantaloupes sold?

The recalled whole cantaloupes were distributed between August 13 and August 17 at various retail supermarkets in five states. Those states are:

• Michigan
• Missouri
• Ohio
• Texas
• Virginia 

What is Salmonella and its symptoms?

According to information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella are bacteria that can make people sick if ingested. Salmonella can cause an infection known as salmonellosis, which can be fatal in some instances.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include:

• diarrhea
• fever
• stomach cramps
• nausea
• vomiting
• headache

Symptoms generally appear anywhere from six hours to six days after infection, though they can appear weeks later.

The elderly, frail, those with weakened immune systems, and young children are more likely to experience more severe symptoms and are most at risk of fatality.

Has anyone been sickened by this recall?

Thankfully, there have been no reported incidents of anyone becoming ill in relation to this recall so far.
