Few things satisfy a sweet-but-healthy snack craving like a granola bar. However, those who enjoy these tasty treats will want to be aware of an alarming new recall notice published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this week.
Select granola bars from MadeGood are now being recalled due to fears that the treats could be contaminated with metal, which could cause injury if consumed. Here’s what you need to know about the granola bar recall.
What is the recall about?
On December 9, Riverside Natural Foods Inc. issued a voluntary recall of some of the granola bar products under its MadeGood brand. The official reason for the recall is that the bars are feared to have a “Potential Metal Contaminant” inside them.
In other words, the recall is being initiated due to the possibility that they contain metal fragments.
Riverside says that it now has conducted an “extensive investigation” of the production site where the recalled bars were made and has identified the problem’s source. “The company has remediated the issue and tested the new processes to ensure that any future risk is fully mitigated,” the recall notice states.
The problem for consumers is that the recalled bars could still be in people’s kitchens and pantries. And some of the recalled bars are holiday themed, which means they may be bound for snacks in people’s stockings.
What products are being recalled?
According to a notice posted to the FDA website, 28 MadeGood products are being recalled, consisting of 12 distinct products in multiple packaging sizes ranging from packages of five bars all the way up to packs of 63.
The 12 types of MadeGood products included in this recall include the following names. Note, however, that only certain-sized packages of the bar with certain UPC codes and certain Best By Dates are included in the recall.
A complete list of the specific recalled products with their sizes, UPC codes, and Best By Dates can be found here. Photos of some product packaging can be found here.
When and where were the recalled products produced and distributed?
According to the recall notice, the recalled products were produced between January 2024 and November 2024.
They were distributed throughout the United States, Canada, and in other international markets.
Have the recalled products harmed anyone?
Thankfully, no. The notice states that as of the time of its publication, no injuries have been reported. Riverside said the recall is being initiated as a precautionary measure.
What do I do if I have the recalled products?
Do not consume them. Instead, take them back to their place of purchase for a full refund.
